Fundamental to this model is a primary caregiving system that promotes secure attachment, a positive self-concept, and a sense of identity. As babies grow their emerging sense of independence and autonomy is recognised and they are supported to do things for themselves and to experience success.

The written guides can be used by individuals or staff teams to generate discussion of the benefits of primary caregiving and to explore child care professionals values and attitudes in relation to primary caregiving. A number of exercises encourages child care teams to work through the practical issues associated with implementing primary caregiving.
